The Digital Nomad’s Guide to Staying Online in 150+ Countries
Three years of remote work across 30 countries taught our team one thing: connectivity strategy beats connectivity luck. Here is the playbook we give every new nomad customer.
1. Layer your connections
Never rely on a single source of internet. The resilient stack is: local SIM or Global Data SIM in a hotspot (primary), phone tethering on a different carrier (backup), and venue WiFi (bonus only). When one fails mid-call, you switch in seconds.
2. Buy data like a local, roam like a pro
In most of Southeast Asia and Latin America, local prepaid data costs $1–3 per GB. Keep a global travel SIM as the landing-day bridge — you are online the minute you clear customs, then grab a local SIM at your leisure.
3. Mind the battery math
A hotspot that dies at 3 PM is a paperweight. Pick a hotspot with a full-day battery and pair it with a compact GaN charger so laptop and hotspot refill from one plug — one less thing in the bag.
4. Security basics non-negotiables
Your own hotspot with WPA3 beats café WiFi every time. If you must use public networks, keep a VPN on and disable auto-join. Your hotspot’s guest network feature is also the polite way to share access with new friends without sharing your main password.
